Types Of Hair Transplants

For those people with a specific type of hair loss, meaning not total baldness, there is the option of hair transplants. However, there are several different types of hair transplants to consider. Of course, in order to even consider them, you have to understand how the different types of hair transplants are done.

During a typical hair transplant process, surgeons take hair grafts from a donor area to transplant to another part of the scalp. There are different sized grafts depending on the donor area size, location, and how much of a bald spot there is to fill. Basically, a surgeon takes these donor hairs, follicles and all, from the donor scalp area and transplants them to the new location. Typically, this area is related to the hair line.

The grafting process is different for each person. However, surgeons make sure that wherever the graft is taken, the existing hair will be able to cover the incision and resulting scar.

Flaps and scalp reduction are also options in types of hair transplants. With the flaps option, a big portion of hair growing skin from the back or sides of your head is transplanted to another part of your scalp. All the while, surgeons ensure that the transplanted flap is still attached to its blood supply to ensure a successful transplant.

With scalp reduction, it is almost like a flap type of procedure. Portions of your scalp which still produce hair are pulled together to fill in a bald area. This is not a great option for a front hairline, but it can work great for other areas of the scalp.

When it comes to these types of hair transplants, you have to contend with different kinds of grafting and surgical recovery times. In addition, you will want to consult with your doctor as to whether your types of hair transplants will be done in one mega session or conducted in various stages. While the mega session is more invasive, it does get the job done at once. However, many doctors prefer the stages of surgery so as not to be totally intrusive on your scalp.

If you are unsure which types of hair transplants would best suit you, talk it over with your doctor. Not every scalp is created equal. By the same token, you may or may not have underlying issues which could direct which types of hair transplants are viable options.
